Organic foods are the foundation for Cali-Go.com. Living organically is important for our families, friends, customers and the planet. Organic is becoming a worldwide "trend" in the food industry, and this why many companies are now looking for ways to have this term on their packaging without actually committing to USDA Organic standards. These companies put on their packaging 'Made With Organic ****', misleading the consumer to believe that it is an organic product, when in all reality, it is most likely that only one ingredient is organic.
We look for products labeled 100% Organic. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), a product can only be called organically grown, organically produced or have organic in the name of the product if it is made with at least 95% certified organic ingredients. You will note that we affix the USDA Organic seal onto those products meeting the 95% standard and do not associate with any organic claims not meeting this standard.
6 Reasons To Select Certified Organic Foods
1. Your Health and Safety.
-Organic practices do not allow added hormones, pesticides, artificial flavor (often made with petroleum), chemically created pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. Most of these elements have been proven to be toxic and/or cancer promoting.
-Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) are also prohibited in organic foods. Unregulated and unlabeled ingredients are now found in 75% of all non-organic foods in the United States (160 countries have banned all GMO foods).
2. The Environment
-Agri-Chemical business is dependent on chemical inputs to grow crops and animals on their nutrient void property. It is estimated that 24 billion pounds of chemical fertilizers are applied on non-organic farms in the US annually. These toxins not only can compromise the nutritional profile of our foods, but they also create runoff dumping into lakes, rivers, and potentially our drinking water. Many pesticides don't break down in water and may remain in the water system for years.
-Buying organic food promotes a less toxic environment for all living things. According to the USDA, only 0.5 percent of crop and pasture land is organic, that leaves 99.5 percent of farm acres in the U.S. at risk of exposure to noxious agricultural chemicals. Organic foods work with the environment, causing less soil erosion and producing fewer toxins. 3. Avoid GMO and Food Irradiation
-Organic labeling is a lot more than avoiding pesticides and other toxins. The processing, handling, and storage of the foods are also regulated. For example even the seeds and animal feed need to be certified organic.
-Organic products are forbidden to use GMO seeds or ingredients. It is unfortunate that companies dedicated to GMO crops and ingredients do not want to let their customers know when they use GMOs. Fortunately, if you want to avoid GMO products you can by selecting certified organic.
-Food Irradiation is a technology that was developed after World War II, in an effort to create “Atoms for Peace”, which was simply a desire to continue funding of the nuclear industry. Exposing food to extreme high radiation (irradiation) destroys vitamins and nutrients which produce cancer-causing chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde. Irradiation kills the food so it has no life and on some products reduces natural decay that causes consumers to avoid these putrefied products. Like with GMOs, producers using this technology do not want the consumer to know if their foods have been irradiated. These companies have lobbied our government to remove the label “irradiated” and replaced it with the misleading radura logo (looks like a flower) or the misleading label “cold pasteurization” Luckily, organic certification eliminates all irradiated foods and processes.
4. Animal Health and Humanity
-The beef industry has acknowledged that 94% of all US beef cattle have hormone implants. Approximately 10% of all US dairy cows are injected with Monsanto and Elanco’s controversial genetically engineered Bovine Growth Hormone. Recent studies indicate that an alarming percentage of non-organic US meat contains antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
-The impact of non-organic practices impacts non-domesticated animals. Wild animals, fish, and birds depend upon healthy plants, streams, rivers and lakes for survival. When pesticides migrate into soils and water ways the consequences are tremendously impactful. In 1962, Rachael Carson wrote a book called “Silent Spring” describing the chain effect from these farming toxins. Insect species were wiped out, so birds stopped inhabiting the area, and then the larger animals stopped inhabiting, essentially killing the area’s eco-system. Without the worms to aerate and bees to pollinate, the non-organic farmer became dependent on chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
-Animals on organic farms cannot be fed 'recombinant feed' (animals parts not fit for human consumption) It has been theorized that this practice gave rise to a form of Mad-Cow Disease.
-Organic ranching excludes inhumane practices such as mutilation (de-beaking, cutting off tails, etc.)
-Factory farms use the cruel and unhealthy confinement of animals on factory farms. Scientists warn that these CAFOs (Confined Animal Feeding Operations) produce enormous volumes of manure and urine, which pollute surface and ground water and emit large quantities of methane (a powerful climate-destabilizing greenhouse gas).
5. Organic Food Conserves Fossil Fuels
-35-50% of climate-destabilizing greenhouse gas pollution (CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide) in North America comes from our energy & chemical-intensive food and farming system.
-Conventional agriculture production uses more fossil fuels than organic food production. In fact, one study shows that sustainable farming methods may use 23% to 56% less fossil energy than conventional farming methods.
6. Build Healthy Soil and Diversity
-Organic practices are designed to be sustainable. This includes practices like crop rotation, building healthy soil, and avoiding non sustainable practices like mono-cropping and chemical fertilizer dependency. These practices create loss of top soil and loss of micro nutrients and minerals in fruits and vegetables.
-Feeding the soil with organic matter instead of ammonia and other synthetic fertilizers has proven to increase nutrients in produce, giving organic foods higher levels of vitamins and minerals. According to a 2005 study, organic farming promotes a healthy planet and healthy food production.
Of course we suggest you buy all of your organic foods from Cali-Go.com, however should you be temporarily outside our service area (hurry back!) please always look for and select organic foods. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider Cali-Go.com.
